Description: 1955 calendar advertising and themed around Ohio author and conservation advocate Louis Bromfield's famed Malabar Farm in Lucas, Ohio. The full-color twelve-month calendar includes color photographs by Joe Munroe and short caption essays by Louis Bromfield. Calendar verso pages feature longer essays on the history and rehabilitation of Malabar and vignettes of farm life also written by Bromfield. The Friends of the Land Collection (1930-1960) contains the papers of the Friends of the Land (1940-1959), a prominent national soil conservation education organization headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. FOTL produced an international literary arts quarterly, THE LAND (edited by New Deal agriculture writer Russell Lord) in addition to several members' only publications (LAND LETTER) and informational pamphlets. They also hosted annual conferences; ran conservation tours, teacher training labs, and workshops; and operated as a national clearinghouse for conservation information. Ohio farmer and novelist Louis Bromfield was active in the organization. Much of the collection reflects the career and interests of FOTL Executive Secretary Ollie Fink, who was a prominent conservation education pioneer in Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This image is a photographic reproduction of a portrait of Charles Hammond (1779-1840). In this portrait Hammond is portrayed in the later years of his life. The intensity of his magnetic gaze belies his age. The portrait is encased in a paper frame with an oval cut-out whose lower border bears the name "Bennet & McLaren, Diamond Gallery, Marietta, O." Charles Hammond (1779-1840) was an attorney, journalist, and early Ohio political leader. He was born in Baltimore County, Maryland. When he was six years old, his father moved the family to a farm in Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia and began practicing law in Wellsburg, Virginia, in 1801. In 1803, Hammond moved to Ohio and was admitted to the Ohio bar. He became interested in the state’s political issues. Between 1813 and 1822, he was elected first to the Ohio Senate and then to the Ohio House of Representatives. His greatest interest was in judicial matters, and from 1823 to 1838 Hammond served as the reporter for the Ohio Supreme Court. During his tenure as court reporter, he published the first nine volumes of "Reports of Cases in the Supreme Court of Ohio." Hammond continued to practice law for the rest of his life. He became well known for his position defending the state in the United States Supreme Court case, Osborn v. Bank of the United States (1824). Hammond argued that Ohio had the authority to tax the National Bank of the United States because it was a business that competed with other businesses in the state. Although Ohio lost the case, Hammond was recognized as an excellent lawyer. Chief Justice John Marshall complemented Hammond's "remarkable acuteness and accuracy of mind." Hammond also had an interest in journalism. Living in St. Clairsville, he edited the Ohio Federalist from 1812 to 1818. After moving to Cincinnati in 1826, Hammond was the editor of the Cincinnati Gazette. He continued to manage the newspaper and write editorials about constitutional law until his death on April 3, 1840. William P. Bennet and Peter McLaren were the proprietors of a photography studio in Marietta, Ohio, from 1868-1873. Bennet is listed as the proprietor of Diamond Gallery from 1873-1884. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Carte de visite photograph of Major General George Meade, from the William T. Sherman Photograph Album, ca. 1865-1880. Meade was born on December 31, 1815, in Cadiz, Spain, where his father, a merchant, was serving as a naval agent with the United States government. Meade attended Mount Hope Institution in Baltimore, Maryland, before entering the United States Military School in 1821 and graduated 19th in a class of 56 cadets in 1835. His main interest was civil engineering, but after marrying, he found it difficult to find civilian jobs, so he returned the to the Army. He is best know for defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee in the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. He died on November 6, 1872 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This is a picture of the Atwood House in Chillicothe, Ohio, a Greek Revival house that was built in 1843 by Jacob Atwood from Baltimore, Maryland. The bricks at the front of the house were brought in from Atwood's foundry in Baltimore, with the rest of the bricks produced in a foundry in the basement. The house has only been owned by three families in it's history and is currently used as a bed and breakfast on the corner of South Paint Street and 4th Street. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.
